Bring Down the Price

April 2010 – Poor access to mineral fertilizers prevents smallholder farmers from replenishing nutrients to the soil and thus increasing yields and incomes. According to IFDC, 85 percent of Africa’s arable land lost an annual average of 30 kilograms per hectare (kg/ha) of nutrients between 2000 and 2004. The Africa Fertilizer Summit, held in 2006 in Abuja, Nigeria, called for fertilizer use in Sub-Saharan Africa to increase from just 8 kg/ha a year to 50 kg/ha by 2010.
