Five years after the Africa Fertilizer Summit was held in Abuja, Nigeria, a $1 billion fertilizer plant is being established in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with an annual production capacity of one million metric tons of ammonia and urea fertilizers. The local plant is expected to meet the fertilizer needs of Nigerian farmers, with surplus production exported.

According to an IFDC report by Dr. Julio Henao and Dr. Carlos Baanante, “The evidence leaves no doubt that the very resources on which African farmers and their families depend for welfare and survival are being undermined by soil degradation.” Efficient use of mineral fertilizers is key to replenishing soil nutirents and thus increasing food production.

IFDC helped organize and implement the Africa Fertilizer Summit.
