NYANZA, Kenya – Local leaders in Rwanda were encouraged to actively participate in the sustainable management and protection of existing forests and newly planted trees during a two-day workshop organized by the Rwandan Ministry of Natural Resources and IFDC’s Sustainable Energy Production through Woodlots and Agroforestry (SEW) project.

According to Bonaventure Nduwayezu, SEW officer, some residents are illegally cutting down trees for firewood because they lack other sources of energy. Nduwayezu says that the SEW project is helping strengthen the firewood and charcoal value chains by promoting private investment through efficient woodlot reforestation and agroforestry.
