According to a study by IFDC, the Africa Fertilizer Agribusiness Partnership and AGMARK, only 30 percent of arable land in East Africa receives fertilizer. “This is due to the high costs of fertilizer importation into African countries,” said Philip Karuri, IFDC representative in Kenya.

Studies of fertilizer markets in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania were presented and discussed during a workshop held recently in Nairobi. Agricultural experts at the event reported that plans are underway to develop a fertilizer investment plan that will enable farmers to utilize subsidized credit services and increase the availability of fertilizers.
