In DRC, Some Tout Fertilizer as Agrarian Panacea

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo – Farmers in the Kivu region of DRC are benefiting from improved fertilization practices promoted by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).

Farmers are learning that “the correct mixture of chemical and organic fertilizer, along with improved seeds, can triple or quadruple yields of maize, rice, beans and potatoes.”

According to scientist Dr. Henk Breman, “The risk of not using fertilizer is a thousand times bigger than the risk of using fertilizer…The soil nutrient balance of this region is the most negative in the world.” Breman led IFDC’s Catalyze Accelerated Agricultural Intensification for Social and Environmental Stability (CATALIST) project in Burundi, DRC and Rwanda from 2006 to 2011.
