DHAKA, Bangladesh – Bangladesh’s Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury urged the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) to introduce a farmer-friendly balanced fertilizer package similar to urea supergranules (known in Bangladesh as ‘guti urea’).

Chowdhury made the statement at a workshop on urea deep placement (UDP) applicators. Chowdhury went on to praise IFDC for its work in Bangladesh to promote and expand the use of UDP – a simple yet innovative technology that involves the placement of urea supergranules into the soil shortly after paddy is transplanted. UDP increases nitrogen use efficiency because most of the nutrient stays in the soil, close to the plant roots where it is absorbed more effectively.
