Experts debate how long reserves of phosphorus will last but agree that more efficient and judicious use of the vital crop nutrient is needed.

“There is no indication there is going to be a ‘peak phosphorus’ event within the next 20-25 years,” says a study by IFDC, adding that “phosphate rock reserves to produce fertilizer will be available for 300-400 years.”

Steven Van Kauwenbergh, author of the report and leader of IFDC’s Phosphate Research and Resources Initiative, conservatively estimates world reserves at 60 billion tons.
