Sustainable Farming Key to Water Security, Says IFDC

(MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala.) Dr. Amit Roy, president and CEO of the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), issued the following statement in recognition of United Nations World Water Day 2014 on Saturday, March 22, 2014:

“Agriculture accounts for approximately 70 percent of the water used around the world. As climate change places even more pressure on the earth’s natural resources, farmers must learn to judiciously utilize their water supply.

“Training farmers on sustainable farming methods, including proper use of fertilizer with drip irrigation systems, is imperative to ensure water security for the global population. By using water and fertilizer more efficiently, farmers can both reduce groundwater pollution and increase their production.

“Though water may appear limitless, it is not. We all have a duty to ensure that this precious commodity is not taken for granted.”
