It is with deep sadness that IFDC remembers and honors Sir David Nabarro, an extraordinary leader whose life’s work advanced global food security, nutrition, and human dignity. We remember him as a World Food Prize laureate, member of the United Nations (UN) Global Crisis Response Group, and a steadfast friend of IFDC.

David’s career spanned pivotal roles in public health, food systems, and humanitarian efforts. He coordinated the UN’s response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak, served as a World Health Organization (WHO) Special Envoy on COVID-19, and championed both pandemic preparedness and nutrition through the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement and the UN High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis.

He was also awarded the World Food Prize in 2018 in recognition of his contribution to globally prioritizing maternal and child nutrition.

At IFDC, we valued David’s insight, encouragement, and shared commitment to transforming agriculture for the most vulnerable communities. His leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on our work and on global efforts to ensure resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems.

IFDC President and CEO Henk van Duijn remarked, “Sir David Nabarro was a visionary leader and a trusted friend to IFDC. His wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to better food systems will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the values he championed.”

We extend our deepest condolences to David’s wife Florence, his family, and all who had the privilege to work alongside him. His vision and humanity will continue to inspire our mission and guide the path toward a world free from hunger.
