Dr. André Bationo

Dr. André Bationo currently serves as a soil science consultant for IFDC, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge. He has held multiple roles at AGRA, including Director – West Africa. Prior to his time at AGRA, he was Coordinator of the African Network for Soil Biology and Fertility (AfNet) and served in various positions at the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Institute of CIAT (TSBF), the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), and IFDC.

Dr. Bationo’s 30-year research career has focused on developing technologies that increase agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring they are appropriate for farmers’ socio-economic and biophysical conditions, while at the same time conserving the natural resource base. His work has addressed topics such as nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics, crop-livestock integration, and water management. He has published more than 300 papers, 10 books, and numerous chapters and conference papers.

Dr. Bationo holds a doctorate in soil chemistry from Laval University in Quebec and has served on several international panels. He has received numerous awards, including the Highest Civilian Award (2000) from the Government of Niger for his contribution to the development of soil fertility restoration technologies in the Sahel and the prestigious Africa Food Prize (2020).
