The Sustainable Agriculture Development Project (SADEP) (2026-2032) aims to contribute to lasting peace and poverty reduction by strengthening food security, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods among vulnerable rural communities in South Sudan.
Funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), SADEP supports climate-adaptive agriculture and fisheries, improved community infrastructure, and stronger institutional capacity. The project is implemented by IFDC in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
SADEP expects to reach approximately 18,700 rural households – more than 110,000 people – with a strong emphasis on women, youth, vulnerable households, and marginalized groups.
Project Objectives
South Sudan’s agriculture and fisheries sectors face persistent challenges, including low productivity, limited access to quality inputs and technologies, weak market systems, and inadequate infrastructure. Climate-related shocks, food insecurity, malnutrition, and gaps in institutional capacity further constrain rural livelihoods.

SADEP addresses these interconnected challenges with the following objectives:
- Enhance climate-adaptive production, productivity, and availability of nutritious food.
- Improve community infrastructure and post-harvest management capacity.
- Strengthen institutional frameworks and provide policy support.
- Respond to emergencies and disasters to support smallholder farmers and fishermen.
Expected Outcomes
Increased Production and Food Availability
Increase agricultural and fisheries production and productivity, improving the availability of nutritious food for vulnerable rural communities.
Improved Infrastructure and Post-Harvest Management
Enhance community infrastructure and post-harvest management capacity for sorghum-based farming systems and fisheries.
Stronger Institutions and Coordination
Strengthen institutional capacity and coordination across the rural sector to support sustainable agricultural development.
Enhanced Resilience
Provide immediate assistance to smallholder farmers and fishermen in response to emergency or disaster to build their resilience.
