The Sustain Africa Burkina Faso project is a five-month initiative (January 2024-May 2024) that aims to improve food security through access and cost-effective use of 20,000 metric tons (mt) of fertilizer by 100,000 smallholder and commercial-oriented farmers in two phases. The initiative specifically targets the value chains for rice, maize, and vegetable crops such as onion, tomato, cabbage, peppers, and squash.

Each phase of the initiative focuses on the distribution of 10,000 metric tons (mt) of fertilizer.

The project is funded by and part of the global Sustain Africa initiative, which aims to supply 200,000 mt to over two million family farms in seven countries.

Sub Objectives

  • Improve sustainable and affordable fertilizer access to agro-dealer networks.
  • Increase fertilizer use through product promotion and demand-creation activities.
  • Improve the availability of fertilizer through the subsidy program.

From its beginning phase, the project conducted two visits to the Société d’Exploitation des Phosphates du Burkina (SEPB) fertilizer blending plant in Koupéla and more than three planning and exchange meetings with SEPB, the Burkina Faso Agro-Input Wholesalers and Retailers Association (AGRODIA), and the Société Coopérative avec Conseil d’Administration des Commerçants d’Intrants et de Matériels Agricoles du Burkina Faso (SCOOP-CA CIMA-BF) to improve project activity.

Sustain Africa Burkina Faso implements various activities based on the sub-objectives such as developing a fertilizer distribution tracking tool, organizing radio extension programs, facilitating the mobilization of financial resources at the level of small-scale producers for the purchase of fertilizers, and other beneficial activities to work towards the project’s goal.
