BARISAL, Bangladesh – Many rice farmers affected by Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh have begun using modern farming methods, resulting in increased yields. This includes IFDC’s urea deep placement (UDP) technology.
UDP is the insertion of large urea briquettes (called “Guti” in Bangladesh) into the rice root zone after transplanting. UDP reduces fertilizer use by 40 percent while increasing crop yields by 20 percent.
According to IFDC country representative, Ishrat Jahan, “Guti urea is taking root everywhere in Bangladesh.”
