According to IFDC, Africa loses $4 billion worth of soil nutrients a year. The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and partners are working with farmers, researchers and learning institutions to find practical agronomic techniques that smallholder farmers can adopt to improve soil fertility.

Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) combines mineral fertilizers and locally available organic amendments (crop residues, compost and green manure) and is used to replenish soil nutrients. The technique has help famers in Kenya increase yields and rehabilitate the soil.
