IFDC, NPFS Partner on UDP Technology

IFDC trained nearly 1,000 Nigerian farmers in urea deep placement technology in 2011 with funding from the U.S Agency for International Development and the National Programme for Food Security (NPFS).

UDP – a simple yet innovative technology – involves the placement of urea briquettes deep into the soil so that the nitrogen is absorbed more effectively. UDP increases yields and incomes while decreasing fertilizer use.

According to Scott Wallace, IFDC country representative in Nigeria, “The deep placement of nitrogen-rich urea briquettes near the plant’s root zone is proven to reduce traditional nutrient loss and mitigate environmental risks. The UDP technology not only improves farmers’ productivity and income, but the need for urea briquettes creates employment.”
