Blessing John Olufemi, a 26-year-old graduate with a Higher National Diploma in Pasture and Range Management from the College of Agriculture and Animal Science (CAAS), Mando, of Ahmadu Bello University, Kaduna State, always had a deep-rooted passion for agriculture. Despite her enthusiasm, familial circumstances where farming was not customary posed significant challenges. However, determined to pursue her aspirations, Blessing advanced her studies in Agricultural Science, envisioning a future in the agricultural sector.

Blessing’s pivotal moment came when she seized the opportunity to serve as an agrodealer tracker under the HortiNigeria intervention in Kano State. This role was a significant stride toward deepening her engagement with the horticulture sector. Through interactions with agrodealers and farmers, she gained experiential learning, witnessing firsthand the challenges and successes of local farmers. She diligently attended training sessions tailored for agrodealers and participated in field days and other farmer trainings, engaging in activities such as sowing, transplanting, mulching, and fertilization.

In October 2023, Blessing applied for the Sustainable Vegetable Production Program Sector Professionals Training under HortiNigeria. Following a rigorous selection process, she was accepted into the program, marking a significant milestone in her development as a professional within the sector. She graduated as one of the top women with a Certificate of Excellence in the program.

“I have significantly expanded my knowledge on vegetable production, efficient utilization of foliar pesticides, and crop protection among other pertinent topics. “

Reflecting on her experience, Blessing remarked, “The program has allowed me to establish meaningful connections with esteemed professionals in the sector, fueling my determination to leverage acquired knowledge to venture into vegetable production and nurture a community of like-minded youth who will contribute to reducing the supply gap in the vegetable supply chain in Nigeria.”

Blessing’s story exemplifies the impact of HortiNigeria in building the capacity of young stakeholders in the horticulture sector. Through the support and training provided by HortiNigeria, Blessing has transformed her passion into expertise, positioning herself as a valuable player and contributor within her community.

The HortiNigeria program (2021-2025), funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) in Nigeria, aims to facilitate the development of a sustainable and inclusive horticulture sector that contributes to food and nutrition security in Nigeria.
