The Transform Soil Fertility Management in Ethiopia (TRANSFORM) Project (2025-2032) is a seven-year initiative funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands which aims to improve soil health and fertility management through inclusive, bottom-up, participatory approaches.

TRANSFORM seeks to sustainably increase the productivity of 100,000 small-scale food producers and enhance the sustainable use of 65,000 hectares of farmland in Amhara, Oromia, Sidama, and the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR).

Sub Objectives

  • Customize extension services and empower farm households to adopt soil health and fertility best agroecological practices at the household level.
  • Increase availability, accessibility, and responsible use of soil inputs through a vibrant soil input sector.
  • Capacitate existing research systems to inclusive, bottom-up, participatory soil health and fertility research approaches.
  • Promote an enabling environment for soil health and fertility improvement.

Expected Outcomes

TRANSFORM aims to drive lasting improvements in soil health and fertility, ensuring more sustainable and productive agricultural systems.

With a focus on strengthening knowledge, access to resources, and supportive policies, TRANSFORM strives to lay the foundation for long-term improvements in farming systems and rural livelihoods in Ethiopia.

  • Increase the income of 100,000 small-scale food producers
  • Reduce the yield gap for 50,000 smallholder farmers
  • Empower 30,000 female farmers in the agriculture sector
  • Enhance the resilience of 100,000 small-scale food producers to climate shocks
  • Implement at least two conservation practices on 65,000 hectares of farmland to improve resilience to climate shocks

The project will use the Integrated Farm Planning (PIP) approach, a structured approach where farm households and communities learn to envision their desired future and create a strategic plan to achieve it. Key principles of this approach include: Empowerment, integration, and collaboration.

TRANSFORM is implemented in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research/Wageningen Environmental Research, ISRIC – World Soil Information, Environment and Coffee Forest Forum (ECFF), and SOS Sahel Ethiopia.

TRANSFORM is made possible by the support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The contents of this site are the sole responsibility of IFDC and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Ministry.
