Lifting the biophysically poorly endowed Sahelian region out of poverty and hunger with booming population, rapid urbanization and changing climate, calls for mobilization of all knowledge and insights, and alignment of the billions of dollars of development assistance to support national development priorities. This report illustrates the need for changes in the fundamental carrying capacity of the region, specifically related to soil and water, and assesses the production capabilities of Burkina Faso to meet its food needs. Development of a resilient food system for Burkina Faso may call for a regionally optimized system with an increasing role for neighboring coastal countries.
