Global fertilizer supply disruptions, rising input costs, and geopolitical instability continue to threaten agricultural production and food security. When international supply chains are disrupted, farmers face delays in accessing essential nutrients, higher production costs, and increased uncertainty ahead of critical planting seasons.

Addressing these challenges requires strengthening local production capacity, improving soil health, and developing resilient agricultural systems that can withstand future shocks.

In this latest paper, IFDC explores how fertilizer innovation, localized supply chains, and sustainable soil management can help countries protect agricultural production while reducing dependence on vulnerable international markets. Through its work with governments, regional institutions, development partners, and the private sector, IFDC connects immediate crisis response with long-term solutions to improve fertilizer access and strengthen food security.

IFDC’s efforts span three interconnected priorities: Farmer Impact at Scale (Fuel the Farmer), Fertilizer Innovation (Feed the Soil), and Sustainable Systems Transformation (Foster the Future), the pillars of its Strategy 2026-2035. Through crisis response and evidence-based policy support, the organization helps governments identify fertilizer supply gaps, assess market disruptions, and develop strategies to protect upcoming harvests. Initiatives in West Africa and conflict-affected regions demonstrate the importance of maintaining access to agricultural inputs when farmers and markets face significant challenges.

At the same time, IFDC promotes integrated soil fertility management, organic and mineral nutrient use, and locally appropriate fertilizer recommendations to help farmers improve nutrient use efficiency and restore soil productivity. By supporting local enterprises and young people in producing organic fertilizers and other soil health products, these efforts also create livelihood opportunities while expanding access to agricultural inputs.

Looking ahead, IFDC realizes that localized fertilizer production and technological innovation are essential to building more resilient supply chains. The organization works with public and private stakeholders to advance decentralized production, regional fertilizer blending, and innovative technologies that make use of domestic mineral resources and agricultural byproducts.

These approaches can help reduce exposure to international price fluctuations, shorten delivery times, and provide fertilizer formulations better suited to local soil conditions and crop requirements. Research, quality assurance, supportive policies, and private sector investment are also critical to bringing these solutions to scale.

By linking fertilizer innovation with soil restoration, nutrient stewardship, and stronger regional markets, IFDC is helping build agricultural systems that can better withstand economic and geopolitical disruptions. This integrated approach supports farmers in maintaining productive harvests today while strengthening the foundations for long-term food security and more resilient food systems.
