Healthy soils are the foundation of productive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural systems. In the Sahel, where soil degradation, climate variability, and increasing pressure on natural resources continue to challenge agricultural productivity, integrating crops and livestock offers promising opportunities to restore soil fertility while improving farmers’ livelihoods.

This webinar, organized by the Soil Values program, will explore how crop-livestock integration can enhance Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) in the Sahel by improving nutrient recycling, enhancing soil health, increasing farm productivity, and building resilience to climate change.

Date: Thursday, July 16
Time: 10:30‑11:30 GMT

Webinar participants will gain insights into practical approaches to crop-livestock integration and ISFM, current research, and experiences from the Sahel and beyond from two distinguished researchers from Wageningen University and Research

  • Dr. ir. Huib Hengsdijk, Senior Researcher at Wageningen Plant Research, has more than 35 years of international experience in sustainable agriculture, soil fertility, natural resource management, and tropical cropping systems. His research has contributed to improving agricultural systems across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
  • Dr. Augustine Abioye Ayantunde, Senior Researcher in Animal Production at Wageningen Livestock Research, has over 25 years of international research experience. He specializes in livestock systems, crop-livestock integration, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable food systems. His work has supported the sustainable intensification of agricultural systems throughout West Africa and other low- and middle-income countries.

Whether you are a researcher, development practitioner, policymaker, extension professional, student, or partner working to advance sustainable agriculture, this webinar offers an excellent opportunity to learn from internationally recognized experts and engage in discussions on integrated solutions for healthier soils and more resilient farming systems.
